Basically this is a concept i must have in my living room .. connected to my sound system:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgMAJUMjB1g

The idea is to have a permanent high quality audio player in the living room with the "cover flow" display of the ipod touch,
to play music instantly with a touch of a finger rather then wait some long minutes for my streamer and the TV to turn on..

I wonder if i should use WSF? or ABS , as ABS is stronger but not so aesthetic..

Looks good, will you have a non slip surface on the underside to stop it from slipping?

    Thanks

Yes, the actual model will have a "click" to hold the ipod-touch firmly from behind + a hidden path for the AV cable.

    wow, thats cool.

Not sure about the WSF vs ABS, except that either way, youll have a lot of post production work to do. I would assume you want the final product to be nice and smooth and shiny, which might make ABS a better choice because you can sand it down smooth. Or you could get a good spray coat on the WSF to make it smooth.

    Idk,

Either way, looks like an awesome project!

    Thanks,

I have good experience with epoxy coating spray on WSF
you can see pics here how WSF and even full color sandstone became smoother & shiner after 2-3 coats:

This project is one of so many ... on my https://www.youtube.com/dizingof channel.

    I need to prioritize... :)

BTW, I got great feedback on this new concept :

Epoxy Spray. Sounds good to me! ill have to find some.

And prioritizing projects, I feel your pain! between my endless ideas for Shapeways stuff, Homework for Mold Design (and some other classes), work, and sleep, there just isnt enough time for everything!

on a completely unrelated note, did you add the signature to the post manually? or did you find out how to add a signature to all your posts?

When i first posted this signature i made my first sale..
A second time , another sale

So.. now i expect my 3rd sale of the "Dock for Iphone" lol

    Hey everyone,

I'm now working on this concept to turn it into a real
Audio/Video Stand for iPod Touch (3rd generation) to be connected to my sound system in the living room.

As i mentioned before, it turns out electronic manufactures
for some unknown reason to me chose to offer an add-on stand for
iPod touch in a vertical position.... thus eliminating the awesome feature on the iPod touch called - Albums cover flow.

When you tilt your iPod touch you get a Cover Flow display of all
your albums and with a simple touch of your finger you browse
through them and pick the one to hear, or a your favorite play list.

By the way, with this concept the time it takes you to turn on your
sound system and pick something to hear is less then a minute
vs long annoying minutes if you're using a streamer.. (need to
turn on also the TV to look what you're doing.. etc..)

So i started with the first design/concept on this youtube video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgMAJUMjB1g

But then i thought what if i want to take the iPod touch out ..
    so these ideas came up:

(i put them all in 1 pic..)
    ipod stand.jpg

What you guys think? would you be comfortable placing this design in your living room near your sound system?

As for me.. i'm sold :)

I'll add a photo-realistic pic to the next post to show you how it will look in real life.

    Hey shapers

I hope i'm not talking to my self here :)

I finished the A/V stand for iPod Touch 3G

Too bad the material cost is high, i done my best to minimize it.

Hope you guys like it , please rate ! ;)

I'd really like to see the photos of this being used, it looks like it'd be a little "bouncy", but I guess it really depends on the thickness of the stem.

The slot in the stem is a nice detail and makes for an attractive shape, though it'd be nicer still to have the wire exit the stand underneath the base rather than on top of it.

Your "in situ" visualisations are neat, but a tip I would recommend for renderings of electrical stuff (and it's a sometimes a pain) is draw it the cables. I usually do this freehand with a tablet. You might think this'll just make it look messy, but it needn't be very obvious - and even a suggestion of cables really goes a massive length to making an object look "real".

    Thanks for your input.

It isn't "bouncy" , the base and the stem were designed to hold the ipod firmly - if you look at it from the top you will see the ipod holder is in the center of the model above the 2 base "legs" which are wide apart to avoid flipping-over even with an accidental nudge.

That's the beauty of it, the ipod looks somewhat floating in the air
grabbing the center of attention in your living room.

About the cable, well this ipod stand is not factory-made.. it's 3D printed so.. i created it so that anyone can insert his/her cable into the slot but it has to get out from top of the base - any other hidden way means cutting and soldering the cable back... and that's not what i had in mind for "anyone".

    I received a 1 star rating... ouch.. that's a first

I assume the guy was pissed of .. he wanted it badly but cant afford the cost of the 3D printing material... :D

(my markup is only $5.. )

I'll see if i can redesign it so to lower the cubic centimeters of material used..

I'm back with a new design.

I took Sandy suggestions plus lowered the 3D printing cost by $10 (It is after all a piece of plastic.. :) )

After 9 hours straight i came out with this Stand for iPod Touch 2

This one can be used on your desktop , near your bed and of
course in your living room connected to the Sound System.
    (that's where i'm putting it).

The whole concept behind these designs is to finally use the
amazing "Cover Flow" display of the iPod/iPhone.. choosing &
playing an album with a touch of a finger.

That is really nice looking! Definitely something I would buy, but unfortunately it's a little out of my price range (but then again, most everything on Shapeways, including my own tiny models, is out of my price range at the moment :p). Still, nice work in creating a stand that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing!

here's a small piece of critisism about the last one.
judging by the photo's you provided. there is a design flaw.
the stand blocks part of the home button. seeing as the home button is essential for taking the phone/ipod touch out of sleep mode. it will be very annoying to press that button repeadetly . not only is it irritating for your fingers but the part thats ubscuring the button is also a potential fail point when there stand might break off or wear out a little bit. and i dont think you intend to take out the device out of the stand everytime you want to use it because that would defeat it purpose.

maybe by carving out that piece where the home button is you shave a few more bucks off the pirnting price.

anyway this is just my observation of the model judgeing from the pictures you provided. looks good though.

    Hi,

Thanks for your "criticism" - i appreciate it ! :)

I take my calculations very seriously, based on my previous
models which you can see in my shop - they turned very
    accurate & functional.

That home button gap didn't escape me.

Google Sketchup has a very accurate and "real life" ruler, and i calculate using Apple's dimensions of the iPod Touch 3G.

Since it's only a 1mm blocking of the Home button i saw no
need to carve a well contoured arc...
Actually i did.. and it looked bad in my opinion , breaking the
"clean lines" of the model - so i think a 1 mm will not annoy you
or me nor cause any tear and wear.

I enclose a snapshot of this 1 mm gap

    Hello Shapers !

The 2 versions of the Stand for iPod Touch didn't fulfill
    my expectations.

Current materials on shapeways (except maybe the Gray robust)
aren't suited to hold the iPod "in the air" without flexing.
    (tested on WSF)

Adding more thickness to the bases of the 2 versions made this
"plastic" stand too costly to consider it for buying. (over $100)

So i went back to the "Drawing Board" and this came out -

Stand for iPod Touch - Version 3

    iPod Touch AV stand3.2805.jpg

Cost wise? - more reasonable.. (+ tiny markup ;) )
    Stylish? - you decide.

The base and the wide stem should hold the iPod firmly -
this time the gravity center is equalized.. this time the iPod is not "floating in the air".

Hope you like it - Please rate & i appreciate any comment.

    Thanks
