At SIGGRAPH, our Community Wall was the star attraction in our booth, and it gave me such joy to showcase the work of our talented community.

So for MakerFaire, I want to go even bigger and better. We would love our booth to have EVERY material represented on the wall, and each panel to be designed by our community. Along with the Model Contest, this weeks Weekend Contest is focuses on showing off the potential of our materials.

So that's where you come in!

We are looking specifically for panels designed for these materials and we want to show off the potential of these materials.

FUD: Show us the details possible, and the moving or interlocking parts!
Full Color Sandstone: bright colors, cool shapes
    Alumide: moving parts!
Steel: cool shapes, take advantage of the finish
Ceramics: imagine what a custom tile for your bathroom or kitchen would look like - what do you want to see?
    and
WSF for color: interlocking parts, moving parts.

The restrictions are: (SMALLER THIS TIME SO WE CAN PRINT MORE!!)

Size: 15cm x 15cm x the materials required thickness - (6" high x 6" wide) so about 1/2 foot square. About 5mm thick is good for most materials, but may be thicker for ceramics,

Holes: four holes, one in each corner minimum diameter 5mm - these are so we can connect them together as show in the picture
    Complies with all material guidelines
Deadline is uploaded by Wednesday August 28th. Post your entries here with a link to the model!

Each Material will have it's own winners, and there can be multiple winners so multiple prizes of $25 Shapeways bucks are up for grabs!

Lets see even more of your faces on our wall for MakerFaire!

    Have a great weekend!

I have taken my Roude Leiw Coaster and enlarged it to make a Pot Stand. It's quite a traditional design, so perhaps a nice contrast with all the other more contemporary models.

Then for the purposes of this contest I have added 'eyes' so that it can be suspended. There are two versions, the first was designed for stainless, second may work for ceramic or perhaps works better for stainless. Both should work for wsf/alumide etc.

    Hi all,
Here is my entry, a butterfly.
The smallest thickness is about 2mm, so it can be printed with any material except ceramic, sandstone and stainless steel.

I've added 4 tiles for 4 different materials.

The first, Star Man, is to be printed in ceramic. It wasn't until I worked on it a while that I noticed a face inside the star.

The second, Rings, is to be printed in FUD. All but the outermost ring can be rotated. Also, when one ring rotates all inner rings rotate with it.
The first image shows it as printed. The second image shows it after rotating each ring 90°.

The third, Headlight, is to be printed in stainless steel. Headlights used to be big heavy glass bulbs with patterns formed on the face of the glass. So, this would be a vintage headlight.

The forth, Ski Lift Chair, is to be printed in Strong & Flexible Plastic. It could be done in any color. Personally, I think white polished would look best.
This is a variation of a desk toy that I am working on. The arm rest can either be locked in the up position like when there are no riders. Or in the down position when in use. It also hangs freely inside the tile framework.

Add a little atmosphere with a tea light candle holder panel. (in FUD)
Be sure to use electric tealights.

This panel highlights several wood carver whimsies that are a pain to make using a block of wood and hand tools. So why not make them the modern way with 3D printing? This panel is best made in strong & flexible or alumide.

This other panel was designed for FCS. It has a hexagonal hive pattern embedded in a contoured block with black and yellow wasp-like stripes. You need to supply your own wasps.

Yikes... I completely missed this... Just 3 days too late to take part! :(

Let me know if the deadline gets extended, or another opportunity to design a wall segment comes around ;)

  16. Here's my design for Full color sandstone - "Spin me!"

The center piece spins on multi-colored! ball bearings printed in place, while the colored 'flower' demonstrates the variety of colors. The center is Shapeways logo, with the website on three edges.

The color palette has room for improvement - if someone wants to play with colors, I'll be happy to send the original Solidworks file. The overall blue color is intended to match Shapeway's official color.
