Inquiry - Cube

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by 274891_deleted, Dec 28, 2012.

  1. Hi,

I want to make a USB holder by ONLY 3D printing, in 3 colors - in cube shape with logo "LF Cube", something like the attached.

I need approx. 50 pieces in a week's time, to reach me on Jan 7 in HK. Possible? I would like to use plastic, can it be hard palstic, or, rubber? What type of file you need, IGS?

    Pls advise.

    Thanks,
    Andy

you might want to make this request in the modeler forum. but i think that would be too soon. you also need to check the lead time on the different materials. 2 weeks on plastic is a little unreasonable though.

    Hi Andy,

The full list of materials can be found here - https://www.shapeways.com/materials
Clicking through on a material will show more info about the material, the design guidelines and the lead time for the material.
There's a comparison of the qualities and build rules overview is here - https://www.shapeways.com/materials/material-options

And sometimes there are expected delays with some materials, the status for each material can be found here - https://www.shapeways.com/materials/material-status

Shapeways only offer one material that can have three colours in the same model, Full Colour Sandstone with a expected shipping time of 8 business days from when an order is placed. If you wanted the cubes coloured as each cube a single colour in plastic, then the only option is Shapeways Strong & Flexible range with expected delivery of 20 days for colours.

However in your image it looks as though the text is embeded in the cube, that would only be possible using Shapeways Frosted Detail - you would end up with a fairly transparene cube and white solid lettering within - the cubes would need polishing to make them transparent, and would end up something like the models I had printed here - https://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&&th=5 289&goto=33678#msg_33678

Quantity is not really much of an issue as each model is printed on demand, but the time frame and material might be. Feel free to send me a PM to discuss what options may be possible.

    Cheers,
    Paul

From the FAQs "You can upload STL, VRML2/97 (.wrl), COLLADA (.dae), X3D and OBJ files to Shapeways. Many modeling applications support these file formats."
To upload a model click on Upload under the 'Create' menu at the top of any Shapeways page.
Once the uploaded model file has been processed, the model will become available in your My Models and you will be able to see the price per unit for the various different materials Shapeways offer.

  6. Hi, Paul,

This is Grace Leung, Andy's colleague from HK. This is indeed a fairly rush program, as decision was made only shortly. Material selected is "Frosted Details". Will it be something that can be done within a week's time?

Thanks a lot for your help and Happy New Year.

    Hi Grace,

The modelling could be sorted out within a few days, however Shapeways have lead times for the materials, none of which come in under a week.

The modelling work is something I can undertake, if the timeframe of the material delivery time is to your liking. I'm just a user/member/customer of Shapeways, so it id probably best if we continue diecussions via PM or email.
