If M.C. Escher had owned fidget toys, he would have worn "One ring to rule the ball" as a pendant. A single, continuous line contains a small ball that makes orbit after mesmerizing orbit but cannot escape, always held down in four directions. Available in solid, durable stainless steel with optional antique bronze and gold plated finishes to fit any context, "One ring to rule the ball" now also includes a free rubber necklace so that you can confuse your mind any time the fancy strikes you! One customer echoes many others in saying, "I couldn't put it down. This thing is just too fun!"

Purchases by those gracious customers have now paid for the design time on this piece so it is available on a pay-what-you-want basis. Ordering from this page contributes 5$ towards continuing work such as the new, even more impossible "One ring to pwn the ball" (just released October 18th!) which can be found at http://www.shapeways.com/model/145172/one_ring_to_pwn_the_ball.html and the open-source "Ultimate Desk Toy" at http://www.shapeways.com/model/109166/ultimate_desk_toy.html . Inspired by the well known mobius strip (discovered by August Ferdinand Möbius in 1858), an interest in the unusual, and 3D modelling, I created the Twin Rail mobius pendant.

A half shell and 3 rails form a bearing-like structure to encapsulate a train of 6mm balls in a mind-warping cage with a twisting, fascinating movement bringing to life the only pendent of its kind in the world.

Includes a 4mm loop for attaching to a necklace or leather cord.

See the photographs with retro-fitted 31 6mm chrome steel ball bearings... in the bottom photo, the balls have been heated until they 'blue'... check out the video to see how they move by clicking on the little icon below the camera above.

Also available smaller and in silver, Twin Rail Mobius Pendant - small

Note: this item is the shell alone, you will need to aquire and fit the balls (31 x 6mm or 29 x 1/4 in) as well as a suitable necklace to hang it from, a 3mm leather cord works well.

A 3-dimensional version of the Hilbert space filling curve. As shown in the photos, if printed in one of the "Strong & Flexible" plastics, it can be used as a bracelet or hair accessory. It takes a little time to reform back as a cube after being stretched, but it seems that leaving it overnight does the job.

This pendant features a mobius style spiral that can enclose a 6mm ball which jingles and jangles when worn.

If you'd prefer a right hand spiral, please see; http://www.shapeways.com/model/169011

NOTE:
Shapeways have decided that this model is unprintable with the ball enclosed.
This model will take a 6mm steel ball which can be fitted by gently forcing open the spiral... see video.
A 5mm ball is available here; http://www.shapeways.com/model/172759 or simply use a suitable (4.5mm-6mm) ball bearing.

An intricate, organic cuff from our Cell Cycle collection which was inspired by the cellular cross-section of bamboo The C-shaped, flexible design fits close to the skin, is light-weight, and uses minimal material.
The design was formed in a simulation of spring meshes. We created interactive software to morph, twist, and subdivide each design, transforming a simple mesh to a complex patterned structure. In our work, we start with a natural inspiration and translate that into interactive software which we can use to generate an infinite variety of forms and patterns.

A matching pair of earrings, resembling small twigs.
Absolutely stunning in the new Premium Silver!
These are actual photos!

Also wonderful in the other metal finished.
For example, the steel printing process adds an almost natural texture to the twigs.
Which also works very well in bronze or gold finishes!

An ornament in the shape of a tree, with some of the roots creating a garland around it. This ornament can stand on a surface or be hung in a window, in a tree or on a door. The branches produce a beautiful pattern regardless of which angle you view it in. All the lines is flowing and come together in harmony. Please note that the "White Strong & Flexible" material will turn yellowish if you leave it in the sun. If you're going to hang it in a window, make sure it faces the side of the building with most shadow.

This shows (a somewhat idealised version of) the path of a juggling club as it is thrown from one hand to the other. See http://shpws.me/a4k3 and http://shpws.me/a4kw for larger, hollow versions, the first suitable for printing in the "Strong and Flexible" materials, and the second for stainless steel.

The usual version of a Möbius strip has as its single boundary curve an unknotted loop. An unknotted loop can be deformed into a circle, with the strip deformed along with it.

In this version, the boundary of the strip is the circle in the middle, and the surface "goes through infinity", meaning that the grid pattern should extend outwards all the way. To save on costs, I've removed the grid lines that would require an infinite amount of plastic to print.

This was designed with Saul Schleimer.

This is a 3D torus knot, a single curve that weaves in and out of itself. It features pentagonal symmetry, but the organic, cellular pattern that composes its surface is subtly assymetrical.

A more than 100 year-old classic for your own desk, in a modern, improved version!
In 1869, Christian Wiener constructed the first model of a cubic surface with 27 lines (in plaster, by hand!). This achievement opened the way for many similar objects in the following couple of years.
One of the most famous of these is certainly the one of the Clebsch Diagonal Surface which had been studied by Alfred Clebsch. Its model was probably planned by Alfred Clebsch and Felix Klein. Compared to the historical model, our version has the advantage that it only shows the surface itself and not a large body of plaster material as a support which is not part of the surface and which distracts from the pure geometry of the surface.
Part of the aesthetics of our objects comes from the fact that we chose to represent the surface in such a way that the ratio between the height and the width of our object is the so-called golden ratio.
