Rocket Espresso Cup

An espresso cup specially designed with fins, to ensure the successful deployment of your rocket fuel. All systems are go! Paraboloid bowl holds approximately 1.5 fl oz. or 45 mL. (Note that I previously claimed the cup held 60 mL. While my 3D modelling software still reports that as the internal volume, some combination of the printing process and glazing is robbing me of internal volume. Contact me if you'd be interested in a larger, more expensive 60 mL cup.)

After receiving feedback from Shapeways, I've created a slightly revised model for the cup. I'm told that this model will be easier to print and glaze, leading to a more reliable product. The changes are minor -- it's a little wider, a little heavier, and has more rounding on edges that were previously sharp (a 3D rendering shows the differences above).

Update (April 13th, 2013): The cup has had a great run on Shapeways, and I deeply appreciate the attention and positive feedback it has received. The bad news is that I've got to stop offering it for sale here. The good news is that the cup is now available commercially! It's being manufactured by Fred and Friends, sold under the name "Blast Off! Espresso Cup Set". It's already available for purchase online (perpetualkid.com, thinkgeek.com), and I'm sure you'll be able to find it in your favourite housewares store soon.

This design balances on the edge in-between functionality, digital aesthetics, mass customisation and object Oriented Eclecticism. In contrast to contemporary thought and design, which views things as the aggregation or assembly of smaller bits and parts, in Object Oriented Design new objects emerge out of an ecology of interaction of multiple and heterogeneous objects. Through a process of formation or computation, highly differentiated, contradictory concepts and structures can become one object, without resulting in an incongruous collage.

The use of contemporary production techniques as 3d printing offers this design a substantial relevance, since it is designed throughout a series of semi automated steps. This would enable the creation of several geometrical variations and color schemes for this design, with the advantage of being able to print out customised vases on demand. All slightly different in erosion type or formation. Always following the same design rules, production time and all for approximately the same price. Economically this makes a lot of sense since their would not be any overstock needed like in other production methods, where prices only go down depending on a large amount of produced items.

Biomimicry Shoe

The idea for this shoe highlights the aesthetics and the shape of the bird skull, along with the characteristics of the lightweight, and highly-differentiated bone-structure within the cranium. Such structure requires less support-material, resulting in optimal efficiency, strength and elegance. by Marieka Ratsma: At the moment the shoe is still undergoing experimentaion in terms of comfort and durability over long hours of use. Once all of the issues are resolved, it will become available for sale to the public. So keep your eyes peeled!

Reeds bangle

Among usual home objects a flower vase is one of the closest to nature. A true masterpiece of our Organic Mystery design line could therefore be nothing else than a vase, which could easily be a solitaire object lighting-up a spirit of any room. To underline the natural wonder of flowers accenting the beauty of organically created shapes we model two variants of vases. The two models differ not only by the surface structure.
