Ball trapped in a spiral cage

This design was inspired by the swirling seed heads of Clematis flowers. When I first saw the seed pods, the first thought that came to my mind was, "The flower is dancing." This model took me longer than expected to finish. My first model was a chaotic tangle of lines. (It looked like the flower went mad instead... hahaha) I went back to look at references to try to capture the original lightness and motion of the flower seeds. At the end, the model was tweaked further to make sure none of the tails intersect each other.

A polished version is unlikely to survive the process.

History
The original model was created in 2006 for a 3d photo collage.
One of the goals was to create a life-like photograph of non-existent objects.
As, at the time, I was pretty sure this was an impossible to produce object.

Then I discovered shapeways ;-)
So now it was succesfully created in real 3d!

Specifications
It is solid to not compromise the design and the price difference was marginal.
Outer diameter is 8.5cm/3.3 Inch and the tips are 0.7 mm quickly becoming wider.
Which overall makes it quite sturdy.

Please be careful with unpacking though, it may be slightly tangled in the bubble wrap.
Then again, mine already survived a 1 meter/3 foot drop, however, I do not recommend that ;-)
It should be treated as a delicate decorative object, it is NOT a toy!

This is a graph embedded in 3-dimensional space as a subset of the cubic lattice. The graph has a fractal structure, analogous to the fractal structure of a step in the construction of a space filling curve, but with greater connectivity. This greater connectivity makes the physical sculpture considerably more robust than the analogous sculpture of a step in the construction of a space filling curve would be. Each vertex at each step of the construction is degree 3, and is replaced at the next step by 8 vertices arranged in a 2 x 2 x 2 cube, with certain choices of edges connecting them to each other. Each edge is replaced at the next step by 4 parallel edges. We begin the construction with the first step being the edges of a cube, and this is the result at the fourth step. The spacing between the vertices varies in order to highlight the fractal structure.

A minimal bangle made of a single surface that twists in on itself like a vortex. When viewed from the front, the two sides of the bangle overlap to create a complex visual effect.
