Half Life 2 meets Portal. Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance's best friend, DOG, contemplating the beauty of his new toy, a companion cube. What else could you possibly want? Oh, that's right, Half-Life 2 Episode 3 would be nice...

Gabe, are you listening?

This uses the original texture maps from the game, you can even see the Lambda Half Life logo on DOG's back.

It wasn't easy! I had to remap all the textures manually, and fix all the geometry to make it printable and thick enough to support the weight. I also made most large pieces hollow, but you won't notice that at all (except in the reduced price this provided).

Cutlery refers to any hand implement used in preparing, serving, and especially eating food.

Aside of the functional aspect of tableware, silverware has always been and will perpetually be an ornamental figure. Conceived to pleasure the eye while fulfilling one of our most primary needs of food consumption and or squander. Cutlery is unique in its ability to sustain time and carries a remarkable family heritage. Sets of knifes, spoons, forks have been passed on from generation to generation all over the globe, traveling the whole world as a piece of personal history.

Key elements while designing this set was the notion of decay/processing, ornamental and aesthetic excess as in former rococo and barock times, moments of collapse/disequilibrium and a balance in between etiquette dining and painful torture tools. By subverting the logic of perfection and beauty, non-perfect images coming from controlled methodologies were generated. What used to be about mastering the result of a non-perfect process is now about the production of monstrosity and the grotesque throughout very accurate mechanisms, like 3d printing. Which creates an unlimited range of possibilities concerning material usage, design approaches/aesthetics and form production.

Proof that it's easy to make fabulously expensive models easily with Mineways: size matters. This one's scaled to print out in color, so really adds up in cost, even with the base being hollow. That said, I didn't spend time making sure all the rooms inside the castle were filled in, so that they could be hollowed out later - I didn't think anyone would actually print this model out! Sarconix did, as a surprise. I suspect I could have saved maybe $20 by placing torches at room doorways and then using the "seal off entrances" option to fill the rooms (which would then get hollowed). Model built by Sarconix in Vokselia, vokselia.com

Almost as awesome as the real thing.

Do not handle roughly! This is a collectible, and is unfortunately not tonka tough.
Don't place this in a liquid or near extreme heat!

I tried a 1 mm/block version of Sentinel Castle, chopping off the western tower and turning off trees, as the walkway there looks too thin to print safely. Shapeways may decide to not try printing this one, but I thought it would be interesting to see. It's certainly much cheaper!

Cutaway of the Museum of the Stuff, suitable for color printing. A model by me, using the program binvox to voxelize the famous Utah teapot. This building houses the Museum of the Stuff, one of each type of block is kept within. Built by hand in the Minecraft world Vokselia, then exported using the free Mineways program.

At 1 mm/block, with trees removed (they'll snap off), made with Mineways. From this world, down south ("east"): http://www.minecraftworldmap.com/worlds/qOZF6 - Really, this model has a number of internal rooms which should get sealed off (manually, by placing torches at the entrances) and then hollowed out. I think this would save $20 or so. But, I'm doubting anyone will actually buy this model; it was fun to export and examine. Download and check it out with the SAP Viewer Complete, for example.

This is the small version of my pencil-holding Discord print.

This model is temporarily unavailable for purchase, Shapeways has decided that it cannot be printed (which is odd, given that I have him sitting on my desk). I should have a fixed version up within a few weeks.

It uses a slightly older, less detailed version of the larger model's mesh and texture. It is also half the cost.
