The Shimmerfall is a fountain that displays designs in cascading water: in this case the letters J and V. The flow of water in drives a mechanism that switches each channel quickly on and off to create the effect: as the water flows down, it passes through many small components that each 'shimmer', allowing the effect to be easily seen with a clear liquid. With a coloured liquid, the 'shimmer' portion can be removed as the effect will be visible with just the liquid itself. This model is the coding cylinder (pieces are printed separately) however the pictures will show the complete model and since this is an entry in the moving parts contest please place your votes for the model here :)

I've wanted to design a larger object for a while. This jewelry stand is about 26 cm tall and 10 cm wide, appropriate for sitting on a dresser or closet shelf. Its various nooks and crannies hold earrings, necklaces, and rings naturally and conveniently. But this model is also extremely personal, because this intricate form is designed to be what has become known as a "3-dimensional ambigram". When viewed from one side, it clearly shows the shape of the name "Vicki", who is my cherished girlfriend and the intended giftee for the stand. When viewed from an angle 90 degrees to the right of that, however, the tangle now clearly resolves itself into the name "Jeff". Check out the pictures or give it a try in the 3d viewer. For me this piece embodies the essence of 3d printing: infinitely personal, intricate, and unique. I hope you all like it.

A set of earrings produced for valentines which appear to be shaped like the name "Vicki" when viewed one way and "Jeff" when viewed the other.

If you like these earrings, please vote for the larger jewelry stand of the same design here: http://www.shapeways.com/model/17127/infinitely_personal_jewelry_cache.html

This is a set of earrings/pendants I created for my girlfriend. Two of the pairs are three-dimensional 'ambigrams', that is, they appear to be different shapes when viewed from different angles. In this case the two main shapes are my name, Jeff, and my girlfriend's name, Vicki. One of the two pairs also shows the outline of a heart when viewed from top and bottom. Give it a try in the 3D viewer!

In my dream home, I would have many plants. Some of those plants would be real and some would be artificial. I've always been disappointed, however, that artificial plants arrive already grown. After all, watching a plant grow as you coax it out of the ground is half the beauty of it.

flowerBox is my answer to this dissapointment. It is a small and mysterious cube that arrives by courier from Shapeways. You open up the package, and follow the care instructions:

Step 1: Carefully but firmly bang out any extra support material that may remain inside your flowerBox.

Step 2: Take a black, waterproof marker and colour the side of the flowerBox that says 'black' completely black, as thoroughly as possible.

Step 3: Snap off the tab on the top of your flowerBox that prevented it from being jostled or damaged during shipping. Carefully place your flowerBox upright in a sunny location, with direct sunlight falling on the black side for several hours a day--flowerBox likes sun! If you wish, this location can be a flowerpot, since flowerBox happily coexists with other plants. Be careful! Once the protective tab is removed, jostling, shaking, pulling on the plant, or inverting flowerBox can kill it.

Step 4: Water flowerbox thoroughly every few days. If flowerBox is overwatered or doesn't receive enough sunlight it will not grow. But if all the care and conditions are just right, flowerBox will germinate and emerge within a week or two, and you can take great pride in a unique and personal artificial plant!

What is Love? It is complex and mysterious. So simple and beautiful, yet with rich and intriguing details. It can be appreciated from a distance, but it begs for closer examination. It mesmerizes us, confuses us, awes us. Love is personal, and yet public. It is changeless in nature, yet it takes so many different forms and configurations. In some ways we can grasp the essence of it in a moment, yet in others it will still bewilder us after prolonged inspection. Love offers much, but demands much as well. Smooth in some places, rough in others, the more we learn about it the more we want to unlock its secrets. To do so we will have to jump through its hoops, hold on through its twists and turn--even when it spins us upside down--and put in the time and effort to build it into our lives. Love is strong, fundamental, and constant: it touches all elements of our being. And if you light a fire under it, it will keep going forever.

"A complex and mysterious thing..." is my attempt to bring some of these ideas together into a physical metaphor for this most basic of human emotions and fundamental of truths. Part puzzle box, part gift(don''''''''t tell my girlfriend), part sculpture, I have tried to stay true to all these different facets while retaining coherence, simplicity, and beauty in the result. Like the emotion it embodies, this sculpture has brought out my inner artist, my inner geek, and my inner child. I juggled ideas for this contest during my holidays, but this one only really took form at the beginning of this month, so I have completed it in 10 days, in between my day job and other commitments. I hope my relationships and other priorities haven''''''''t suffered too much :) . But even if this form never sees actualization, which would make me sad, the experience of creating it has been incredible for me. I have enjoyed the way so many little things fell neatly into place, with the result emerging much more on its own energy than because of anything I put in. And the end result, especially with the possibility of its actual incarnation, is extremely exciting for me. This has truly been a labour of love.

I beg your forgiveness in advance, because in my time zone it is now very early in the morning, and I am scheduled to work a 13-hour day tomorrow, so I have not had time to upload any extra pictures or add explanations of my model''''''''s details. I also gave the model the wrong orientation when I did my final rescaling. I hope to correct that and add more details here as I am able. Once again, I apologise.

But in the meantime, I hope you enjoy this "complex and mysterious thing". After all, sometimes mystery is itself part of the point :) .

Sincerely,
eMansipater
