This kinetic sculpture is inspired by the unlimited freedom of 3d printing,
it wobbles and turns with a slight movement of the hand.
Now give it a good spin or puff of air and it erupts in erratic and wild behavior.

Instructions
It is composed of four concentric cubes, each one spinning around a different axis.
The model needs some minor assembly:
Each inner cube has two knobs which need to be placed into the corresponding clamps in the parent cube. It's easiest to start with the inner most and continue outward.
And then... spin it away !

Notes
Do not be alarmed if your cube will not run smoothly at first!
Because of minor variations as a result of the printing process,
some need to wear in a little but will loosen up very quickly.
In the example video I am blowing on it to make it move, it's that smooth.

Be a little careful with (the assembly of) the Alumide version as this material is slightly less flexible/robust than the Strong & Flexible materials.

A default set consists of an Alumide Gyro the Cube and a White stand, you can change the materials in your cart later. +

An espresso cup specially designed with fins, to ensure the successful deployment of your rocket fuel. All systems are go! Paraboloid bowl holds approximately 1.5 fl oz. or 45 mL. (Note that I previously claimed the cup held 60 mL. While my 3D modelling software still reports that as the internal volume, some combination of the printing process and glazing is robbing me of internal volume. Contact me if you'd be interested in a larger, more expensive 60 mL cup.)

After receiving feedback from Shapeways, I've created a slightly revised model for the cup. I'm told that this model will be easier to print and glaze, leading to a more reliable product. The changes are minor -- it's a little wider, a little heavier, and has more rounding on edges that were previously sharp (a 3D rendering shows the differences above).

Update (April 13th, 2013): The cup has had a great run on Shapeways, and I deeply appreciate the attention and positive feedback it has received. The bad news is that I've got to stop offering it for sale here. The good news is that the cup is now available commercially! It's being manufactured by Fred and Friends, sold under the name "Blast Off! Espresso Cup Set". It's already available for purchase online (perpetualkid.com, thinkgeek.com), and I'm sure you'll be able to find it in your favourite housewares store soon.

This design was inspired by the swirling seed heads of Clematis flowers. When I first saw the seed pods, the first thought that came to my mind was, "The flower is dancing." This model took me longer than expected to finish. My first model was a chaotic tangle of lines. (It looked like the flower went mad instead... hahaha) I went back to look at references to try to capture the original lightness and motion of the flower seeds. At the end, the model was tweaked further to make sure none of the tails intersect each other.

This steampunk style knotted cog was procedurally generated using 3-dimensional spherical geometry, then stereographically projected into our (mostly) Euclidean universe.

This steampunk-inspired pendant features three gears that spin round and round the center handle and gear. The gears, front, and clock hand all spin at different rates, producing a fascinating spin that will keep even the most fidgety hands occupied.

An elegant and modern vase inspired by the Japanese paper-folding craft. Height 28 cm.

This is a three-dimensional Union Jack.

After some light sanding the parts will fit together very snugly, without any need for glue.

I've colored this one with Sharpie brand permanent marker, which appears to work well and not transfer to the white parts of the model too much.

Don't stuff your brain inside a box. Pull it out, save the bubble wrap, and watch what it can do outside of the box. You'll be amazed.

This is for making impressions on sealing wax in the form of a gear. This is primarily directed at the Steampunk audience, but it would also be appropriate as a gift for someone mechanically inclined. All seals are 3/4" diameter unless noted otherwise.

The top of the handle is marked to make it much easier to align the impression and avoid setting it upside down or crooked, though this design in particular really has no wrong way thanks to its symmetry.

Premium sealing wax can be ordered through our main website or Etsy Store. This seal looks very nice in Copper.

Please use caution when working with fire and hot wax to avoid burns.
