The BBC feature The Code, which aired in the summer and fall of 2011, culminated in a treasure hunt. This is the treasure. The original was made in bronze-finish steel and silver; this recoloured model shows the structure. It is a rendering of the five Platonic solids, nested.
An uncoloured version is here.

The worst ear plug the internet has to offer. Use this size for gauges up to 1" in diameter. Designed with a slightly raised rim for a snug fit.

To Clarify: These earplugs are sold individually, not in pairs!

If you need a size larger than 1" diameter, please PM me and let me know what size you need. I'll want to scale up the hands and adjust the ring thickness accordingly to make sure it stays light enough to wear comfortably.

The printed copy shown is a 7/16" version printed in white detail material. I recommend this material, as it is more comfortable for wear and has a smoother look.

Make sure to specify a size in the Co-Creator Template, there is no standard size for this model!

For standard sizes up to 00 gauge, you'll want this model:

Update: Dremelfuge is now provisionally available in the "Strong and Flexible" material, after some basic testing. No guarantee of safety is given, as always. The "Strong & Flexible" material Dremelfuge creates more vibration in use, which may indicate less stability than the "Grey Robust" (ABS) material. Caveat Emptor: As always, Dremelfuge is sold as an ornament, and any use as a tool is a risk entirely taken by the purchaser/user. I accept no responsibility for the safety of Dremelfuge.

DremelFuge is a centrifuge rotor for use with a rotary tool such as the popular "Dremel". As an Open-Source Hardware, DIYbio-inspired design it is intended to enable and inspire scientists world-wide.

At a rotary speed of 33,000rpm (the top speed for a standard Dremel 300), Dremelfuge can deliver up to 52,000g/rcf (1g = the force of Earth's gravity) on a sample in a standard 1.5ml microcentrifuge tube, measured halfway down the tube. This far exceeds the speeds typically used in lab protocols.

Dremelfuge can be used to collect bacteria, proteins, DNA or anything else suspended in a sample. Dremelfuge can be used to extract plasmids from cultures, to purify and cleanse DNA after enzymatic reactions, to remove precipitated impurities or for any other task calling for a powerful centrifuge.

It requires only the 5mm cutting tool holder that comes with the Dremel 300.

For safety reasons, Dremelfuge is sold as an ornament or curio; although demonstrated to be effective and reliable for routine lab tasks, use of Dremelfuge for any task other than as a decorative item is performed entirely at the risk of the buyer. It is suggested that all appropriate safety precautions be taken in such cases, including but not limited to eye protection.

The source files for Dremelfuge are hosted on Thingiverse here:

Own the Tesla Valve, as per the original design of Nikola Tesla, patented in 1920. See the video below to observe the valvular conduit in action.

Nikola Tesla invented this valvular conduit as a valve for his engines. Materials at the time were pretty bad, and valves were unreliable. Tesla figured that by removing any moving parts from a valving mechanism, he could create a simpler and more robust valve. The hook regions in the Tesla Valve reroute the fluid back in on itself creating a bit of resistance. All the hooks added together do a good job of arresting the fluid, especially when the gas or liquid is pulsed through the valvular conduit.

When you hold the valve in your hands after opening your shapeways package you are possessed of a strange kinship with the historical figure of Nikola Tesla. Pressing your lips to the valve, and blowing through it, you see that it actually works. In the resistive direction your breath is nullified to a mere whisper by the Tesla Valve. And in the non-resistive direction, air flows through unimpeded. It is startling the effect, and to think something so interesting as this valvular conduit was made so long ago.

I made this valve to commemorate Tesla's birthday on the 10th of July, 1856. Owning this valve is a way of recognizing a forgotten genius of unparralled creativity.

This Universal Equinoctial Ring Dial 2 is a portable and self-orientating sundial. You can see how a similar dial works: http://www.sunwatchmaker.com/instructions.php .

This is an improved version of a previous model:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/132928/universal_ring_dial.html

You'll receive five parts unconnected and undyed. Follow these instructions:
1. Clean the parts with cold water and soft brushing to remove support material remaining from the 3d printing.
2. Dip the parts in cold tea for a couple of hours. Holes will get more dyed because of the support material trapped in them. The slider part doesn't have marks, but with the dying will get as yellowish as the other parts.
3. Paint with black ink the marks. Let dry the ink and then remove it with a wet sheet. This way, ink only remains in the marks. In the photo the slider and some zones of the rings weren't inked so they maintained the yellow tone because tea dyes all no flat surfaces. The hour ring has marks on both sides, but only one needs to be dyed.
4. Enter the slider with a little pressure through the slit of the central (month) bar. It's only possible over June and July marks. Then move the slider to the desired month and day mark. Each mark represents two days.
5. Deform lightly the meridian ring (the bigger one) in order to insert the hour ring. Be sure that both rings have their dyed faces on the same side when in folded position.
6. Deform again the latitude ring to put the central bar in position. Check the photo for the right orientation.
7. Finally, insert the eyelet through the "jasolo fecit" part of the meridian ring and displace it to the latitude value of your location. To improve the sliding of the eyelet, you can clean the path with a stick before the insertion (again the support material).

You can purchase the individual parts in case you need any replacement:
- Meridian ring: http://www.shapeways.com/model/185486/universal_ring_dial_2__meridian_ring_part_.html
- Hour ring: http://www.shapeways.com/model/185480/universal_ring_dial_2__hour_ring_part_.html
- Central Bar: http://www.shapeways.com/model/185737/universal_ring_dial_2__central_bar_part_.html
- Slider: http://www.shapeways.com/model/165846/universal_ring_dial_2__slider_part_.html

From above, a classic Egyptian scarab; from below, a real scarab.

The scarab is in a typical defensive posture, legs folded. As a result, it presents a strikingly different aspect when turned over.

This model is scaled to fit well in the hand, and because of the folded posture, is robust enough to travel well in a pocket. Mine goes with me everywhere. Warning: the claws are as sharp as they look.

A delicate free form model dubbed "Holey".

Makes for some nice Christmas decorations :-)

Minimum thickness is around 0.25 mm on the inside struts.
Prints perfectly in Strong & Flexible, might get bend a bit during transport, but you can bend it back gently if you hold it in warm/hot water.
The tips are sharp and fragile, so please handle with care.

This radiolaria-like object started out as a simple cube which has undergone several iterations of fractal subdivisions, each with a small amount of displacement applied. Next the edges between each point have been traced volumetrically and then smoothed in order to create this final form - the lattice representation of the original mesh.

This Universal Equinoctial Ring Dial is a portable and self-orientating sundial. You can see how a similar dial works: http://www.sunwatchmaker.com/instructions.php .

You''ll get in position the meridian ring, the equatorial ring and the central bar. The eyelet must be inserted through the "jasolo fecit" part of the meridian ring. The slider is entered through the slit of the central bar and then it is turned with a little force.

For finishing, dip the model a couple of hours in cold tea (hot or warm tea will deform the model). Later, paint with black ink the marks and once dried, remove the ink with a wet tissue (ink will remain on the marks).

The Fire Gauntlet is an articulated hard-shelled glove, 3D printed all at once, fully assembled. The model is based on a 3D scan of my hand, with a 1.5mm clearance between the scanned surface and the printed model to allow for a Nomex cloth lining. Ideally the final design would be in stainless steel, but there are many challenges to making that happen. This prototype is a good start.

This version is only for display and is bonded to the production frame. It was printed using White Strong & Flexible material, painted and mounted on a wooden base.

Update: Jury 1st Prize winner at the 2011 International Puzzle Design competition

Two open-ended Superstrings with the correct spin can be merged into a super-symmetrical cube.

The idea for this puzzle emerged when I was designing shapes based on two interlocked tetrahedra.  Inspired by ideas from 'string theory' and 'super-symmetry', I began to search for shapes that were both symmetrical and as similar as possible.

Taking the two pieces apart is not too difficult; reassembling them back into a cube can be more challenging. Hold one of the pieces still; move the other piece through the correct sequence of lateral and rotational moves.

Two colour dyed version in a perspex display case available from Etsy.

Reviews of Superstrings by puzzle enthusiasts from around the world.

"Another great little pocket puzzle from Richard Gain" - Allard Walker - Puzzling Times

"I can't really think of any downsides with this one, it was an elegantly designed puzzle that was fun to solve. Well done, Richard!" - Brian Pletcher - Mechanical Puzzles

"An attractive tactile puzzle with a decent challenge but not too awful - a really good addition to my display." - Kevin Sadler - Puzzlemad

"This is a really tough puzzle, and I can see why it won favor with the judges at IPP. Much easier to take apart than it is to put together, Richard can be rightly proud of this one." - Neil Hutchison - Puzzling Parts
