I sliced the sides so that the piece will fit better on a shelf, against a wall, or window frame, etc. Its not heavy enough to work as a book-end, but will make a great book-spacer.
For a shiny wet and reflective surface, give the piece a coat of clear varnish, lacquer, or shellac or a heavy plastic resin coat like a decoupage compound.
