Hello all! A few weeks ago, we decided on new colors to replace Winter Blue and Winter Green Strong & Flexible. We will still keep Winter Red around since it was one of our best selling colors.
We had a survey to poll the results, and the top three colors were Purple, Orange, and Grey. Even though I know Orange is popular, especially among the Dutch football/soccer fans among our community, it actually didn’t sell too well when we offered it. So we decided to go with the other two (Purple and Grey). We ran some tests and here are the results!
(BTW: Many thanks to Boredom.Is.Me for letting us use his designs!)
Grey
Here are the various grey combinations we try. The different shades are due to experimenting with different concentrations of dye and different length of time the objects soaked in the dye. I think they turned out nicely, if I do say so myself.
A better, white balanced picture:
Purple
The “Purple” was interesting as well. The models actually sort of a midnight, Yves Klein Blue (which btw is a lovely color). They do have some purplish hue in them, a Blue-Purple if you will (Blurple?). Check it out:
So… what do you guys think of these colors? Let’s hear your thoughts!
The purple looks great! Totally go Yves Klein, if you ask me. Grey is a bit harder to judge and/or choose. A dark grey could look real nice, but it should have enough distance from our black, which is a bit grey-ish.
Glad you liked it! You can’t tell from the photos, but the color is very evenly distributed as well on all 3 of the sample piece we got. That is sometimes a problem with the colors, they don’t evenly distribute for some reason.
I agree about the need to not have it too close to black. When I dye stuff myself it’s also hard to get the black to be more than a greyish charcoal sort of black, I think it’s just the way the material absorbs color and light. My vote is the 4th grey piece in the photo.
Also, colors are so interesting. To make sure I had images that actually matched the colors (it’s amazing how much the colors change when I take the picture and upload it to my computer), I held up the samples next to the screen for comparison. The samples actually looks more purple against my computer screen (which is white), and looks more blue on my desk (which is also white). Maybe it’s the way the light interacts with it. Fascinating!
Black and Purple? Those are Ravens colors!
Blurple is my favorite color! No, really, it is, but on my Etsy listings I just call it royal violet to avoid confusion.
Hard to say… without color calibration or color reference it can be anything between blue and purple and the grays can be anything between warm and cool gray.
One thing you could do is shoot these colors with a neutral reference graycard, and calibrate the image white balance with the card.
Yes a neutral comparision to a color chart would be great!
What’s also a problem for me that colors change in a cycle that even don’t me allow to make more then 2 orders with the same color.
Would be a great thing to make that in some kind reproducable. I.e. selling the mixed color packs of the colors used so far and leaving the rest to the user .

I used the white balance feature on this one, then tweaked a bit with a photo processor to get it closer to what I actually see. Thoughts?
Probably better, grays seem quite neutral.
But what I meant is taking a shot with a card like explained in this link:

This will also help determining how dark the grays are
