Ever wanted to know exactly how many hits you get in your shop on any given day? Where they come from? What keywords they used to find you? How long they stayed on your page? What browser and operating system they used? What exactly was their screen resolution and how many colors it displayed? Ok, maybe not the screen resolution.
Then it sounds like you need Google Analytics.
We have has SO MANY requests for this we have now made it possible the the latest site update. The amazing team of developers also made it as easy as possible so you do not need to paste a HTML snippet but just a simple code, for full instructions of how to make it happen in your shop follow the Google Analytics tutorial.. And don’t forget to make the most of any AdWords vouchers that Google is bound to send your way!
Wow – that’s really cool guys. Just created the code, very curious to see the info coming in.
Had a feeling you would be one of the first to jump on it. 🙂
Apparently there can be a 24 hour delay in data.
Are you calling me a control freak? 😉
Of Course not, but you may now be Analytical? 😉
24hours Duann? 😛 i’m refreshing like every 30seconds 😛
Are you saying you tracking is working already?
still not working here! still waiting 😀
hehe no,, i thought i just have to wait for 2minutes or something,, so started pushing F5 every 30sec 😛
As one of numerous people who requested better stats, I couldn’t wait to try this out ! code sucessfully pasted.
Great job Shapeways developers !
Couldn’t ask for a simpler way to insert traffic tracking code to my shop!
This is what i wrote back in June 22nd 2010:
“BTW, too bad shop owners cant have a unique counter
generated on the fly by shapeways server on every model page
with a detailed info on incoming traffic, GEO location , referring URLs etc…
This is an absolute essential in my opinion.
Testing different types of traffic-sources even dare i say AD
WORDS paid traffic… can produce nice sales for a shop owner.
I hope shapeways will consider this – this will defiantly increase
shop owners active involvement with generating traffic/sales. ”

Again, nicely done ! 🙂
Dizingof
🙂
So now the race is on to see receives the first trail of data from google…..
Who will it be?
Oh, finally!… On my way to try this now…. May end up ditching my Blog that was keeping track for me.
Glenn
I signed up too, I wonder if it works
Thanks for implementing it 🙂
Still not working here either. Are you sure the profile should say “shapeways.com” and not “www.shapeways.com”? My other sites have www in them – no idea if it makes a difference.
My stats are not working for now, too. I’m wondering if the profile URL should not be “www.shapeways.com” or to allow subdomains : “.shapeways.com” .
try it 🙂
analytics doesn’t accept “.shapeways”. I changed to “www.shapeways.com”.
Now I found that “http://www.shapeways.com/shops/yourshopname” as profile URL seems to work. Analytics is now collecting data…
With “http://www.shapeways.com” and “http://shapeways.com” ,Analytics is searching for the code on the Shapeways frontpage and obviously doesn’t find it…
tried it but it says my code isnt installed? :/ i did place the code in the shop
collecting! it works fx2
How about http://checkout.google.com/sell/?utm_campaign=US-en&promo=sbs&utm_source=US-en-et-receng-we1-analytics-2&utm_medium=et-9&hl=en
Should have been a link but it’s to set up google checkout
Still nothing for me, after about 30 hours I think. Changed from shapeways.com to http://www.shapeways.com this morning though.
We made a boo boo here. Your URL to track should be:
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/
The tutorial is updated!
I meant http://www.shapeways.com/shops/*YOURSHOPNAME*
I put YOURSHOPNAME between brackets but that seems to be filtered out. :/
I was right with the URL change ! Unfortunately, this will track only a very little percentage of the traffic we get. For instance, if someone makes a search on the Shapeways website or simply goes to the model page (outside of the shop), the tracking code will not record that…
Forget the part of my precedent message about the tracking percentage. The tracking code is shown in the page source code of every item, even outside of the shop. Great work, thank you !
This is an awesome feature 🙂
Thanks!
Within minutes of this blog post, I had set up my analytics account and everything.
Both for my blog and for the shop I got a succesful connection.
For the last I figured the url should be the shop url 😉
Within hours I got the first results from my blog.
But the shop has been stuck on “wachten op gegevens” -> “waiting for data”.
(Analytics is geïnstalleerd en de gegevens worden nu verzameld.)
It’s been linked for over 36 hours?
Anyone have the first results yet?
Cheers!
Oh and is it possible to include the tracking on http://www.shapeways.com/hisdesign pages ?
Looks like it ain’t gonna happen for me. Still have the yellow triangle after two days.
Same here. 0 visitors after 2 days :-/
It says “Tracking installed” but no visitors.
Url: http://www.shapeways.com/shops/dizingof
One better than me… I don’t even get the tracking installed…
Well a look at the source pages of my shop shows that the javascript code uses someone else code not mine:
it should be UA-18571459-2
Check yours (right click on your shop’s page –> view source –> scroll all the way down and see the above code) to see if the tracking code is yours.
Of course, they put their Analytics code on your pages, too… If you look exactly, you will notice two different tracking codes.
Correct.
It remains a mystery why no data shows up
Didn’t see this until after I posted my #20 message. I am not re-doing. There is something wrong here. You will see that the tracker Google puts in at the end is in between Javascript code. The ones we put in (mine is at line 1158 when viewing the source) is NOT in between a piece of Javascript; it’s just a piece of text. We were told when setting this up that we did not need to grab the code from Google when setting up, just to put the number given on our page.
This seems to be confirmed when going to Analytics and to the right of the link to “View Report” there is a yellow triangle that says “Tracking Not Installed” when you put your mouse over it.
Still looking for an answer, Shapeways.
Glenn
Yep, Dizingof, I have the same errant code that you have. I, too, followed the instructions from the tutorial when first posted. I thought that by going to Analytics and changing the address it would work but I think all I changed was the name of the Analytic report. I am now in process of adding a completely new one…
Glenn
Well, after replying to #19 above and saying I wan NOT going to re-do I finally gave up and created a NEW Analytic account using the revised instructions. My yellow warning triangle in the Analytic page now says “Tracking Unknown” which I’m hoping means I now have to just wait for it to “set up”. ALSO when viewing code for my shop the Analytic code IS now in between Javascript code, so I’m hoping this will now work.
In short, if you set up using the old incorrect tutorial I suggest you re-do and put in your correct shop URL rather than trying to edit the first one.
Glenn
Okay, is anyone still experiencing problems or is ti just me? This still isn’t working. The Analytics code matches that in my Shapeways pages, BUT I notice that the Javascript code sets the domain name as shapeways.com, even though I went through and re-did it with my Shop name. The status code is a yellow triangle with “Tracking Unknown” There are only two other status’ that it can be “Waiting for Data” and “Receiving Data”.
I would like to know if any other users have managed to get one of these status notes, and if so did you do anything different from the tutorial when setting it up?
Glenn
The domain name in the javascript should be shapeways.com so that is correct.
The “website url” in the edit tab should be http://www.shapeways.com/shops/shopname
Make sure not only the description is changes but the actual tracking url.
As soon as the code is correctly included, the status on analytics should change from “tracking unknown” to “waiting for data” or similar (with a clock symbol) if you still get the triangle, analytics can’t find the correct code.
After 24 hours it should then change to a green “v” with description “Received data”
For my blog it went to green within hours. shapeways tracking has been stuck on the “clock” and has not gathered or shown me any data.
According to google help, if after 24 hours still no data is showing, there is probably something wrong. It’s been over 48 now I think.
The phrases might be dissimilar, as I get them all in dutch.
The English phrases are :
“Tracking installed” for the clock symbol
And
“Receving data” for the green v
Thanks, yes, the tracking URL is correct (with my shop URL). All is as it should be as far as I can see, but for 12hrs I have only got the Yellow Triangle and “Tracking Unknown” .
Glenn
That’s weird, at first I had things filled out wrong, and later corrected them.
On the overview page:
https://www.google.com/analytics/settings/
should show something like this in *bold*:
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/slinger UA-18613312-1
and below that a description (which defaults to the url)
To the far right should be a link “edit”
On that page with the url:
https://www.google.com/analytics/settings/profile_summary?id=
Website-url should be the shop link.
On that page to top right is also a link “refresh status, perhaps try that.
Going to
https://www.google.com/analytics/settings/check_status_profile_handler?id=
Thanks very much -anonymous- I did check all of the above and what worked for me was the advice to hit the Refresh Status link – although it’s actually CHECK Status. Once I did this I now have a clock symbol saying Tracking Installed… Hopefully just need to wait now.
Glenn
My code is showing as :
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push([‘_setAccount’, ‘UA-18573897-2’]);
_gaq.push([‘_setDomainName’], ‘shapeways.com’);
_gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’]);
At least it got me past the triangle 😉
And mine reads
here it’s still gathering information,,, so no information yet
And did you do anything different to the tutorial? Or are you like me – one of the few who jumped in and set this up with the wrong tutorial info first posted?
Hi I’ve had the clock symbol in the status column for over 24hrs it tells me that tracking is installed.
V
We are looking into why the tracking is not working. I will let you guys know when we have results to share.
Any news on why this is not working?… I did get my Etsy store Analytic running following my example in Post #28
Glenn
Not yet. We are working on it. Please hang on we will get it fixed. I will post a message this blog post to notify everyone.
This is great news, thanks!
See post #21 above and my response to it to get rid of the Yellow Triangle now replaced with a Clock saying Tracking Installed.
Glenn
NOT working for me…. 🙁
It has been set up almost 3 days now but not data receiving… 🙁
Okay, maybe this will help. I actually think Shapeways had the tutorial right the first time. If you go to Etsy.com and see their instructions for setting up Analytics you see this:
•When asked for your Website’s URL enter Etsy’s URL (www.etsy.com)
•When asked for your Account Name enter your Etsy shop website address (shopname.etsy.com)
……
Notice this is different to the instructions from Shapeways in step 2.4 where we are told to put our SHOP URL into the ‘Website URL’ field – Not so. Etsy has you simply putting http://www.etsy.com and THEN in the ACCOUNT name field you put your SHOP URL…
“Account name” is just the name of your analytics account..
And that is purely cosmetic. As is profile name.
You can use one analytics account to track multiple website profiles, so that is unrelated to the tracking url.
Technically things should be fine after it has detected that the tracking is installed.
Perhaps it’s a “rights” setting somewhere ? Because of the overlap of tracking id’s?
Shapeways might need to “allow” other people to track on their website?
Or “share” (sub)-statistics or something.
But I’m sure it will be resolved soon enough.
I just noticed, I got an actual green V!
I have no seen any data yet, but probably not too long now!
I too have a green tick
Yay, I finally have a green check mark also… Not showing anything yet but supposedly receiving data.
Glenn
Yes, we did a small update today. I see now visits in my test shop. I hope you see data coming too.
Yay! I got data too ! 🙂
Excellent work guys!
I’m getting stats, thanks
Worked for me too! 🙂
I had checked the e-commerse website tracking checkbox as well.
Yes, finally working too. Respectable number of hits, too.
Glenn
Most of the Shapeways community would be considered on the high end of tech savvy, with the ability to generate 3D models in CAD, the initiative to seek out and use a site like Shapeways to realize their ideas and the entrepreneurial spirit to commercia
Hi guys, Thanks for doing this tut,
I have tried following the tutorial but it will not accept my shop url
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/gromfrog
i try it with http://www. and with out and with www. and without and it never works
Would you be able to help as seen many people have had success with this.
Thanks
Ryan
