Shapeways community member and jewelry designer Improbablecog has just launched a Kickstarter project to to fund the release of his three most popular jewelry designs from commercial slavery.
So instead of making a small mark-up each time a piece of jewelry sells, Improbablecog will get an up-front payment ($1500) from 'investors' freeing him up with a cash influx to design more jewelry. Very smart, how many pieces of jewelry would he need to sell, over what time to make that cash?
The Specifics Within 1 day of the project being fully funded ($1500), Improbablecog will.... - Make the original 3D models for these three items available for free download from my website.
- Upload them to Thingiverse, a repository of open source product designs.
- Make them available to be 3D printed, at cost of materials from Shapeways.
- Put all three under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license which allows the following:
"... lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use."
