Hi Guys,
Look what I have received.
The left bunny is the finishing we have right now. Do you see the difference….?
Do you like the difference?
What would you use it for?

The smoother the better — I joined Shapeways and installed blender on my computer for the express purpose of making hairtoys — combs and hairsticks.
Metal is ALL that is suitable for that for strength purposes (especially for hairtoys for very long hair), and it must be SMOOTH.
I’ve pretty much been biding my time until the materials and fabbing caught up with the requirements for exceptional strength and smoothness.
Nice…
Is that a double plating of gold process? OR *higher resolution* settings on the Stainless Steel printer? 😛
Either way it’s great news for jewelry designers – Gold should shine as Gold
Is it already available ?
Hi Janis do you have some samples models of what you do and how smooth your are looking for?
@Dizingof Material is currently not available. It has been polished after the plating process
Unfortunately, I have none that I can prep in time. Pesky day job … 🙂
I’d say shinier the better! There’s no getting away from the fact that the gold plated stuff is weird – it’s not at all like the gold things we see in the world around us already. But I think it’s weird in a good way, and really has a charm all of it’s own, like the 3d printed steel. It shows the signature of it’s manufacture, and I’m all for truth to materials and all that stuff. However, I’m also of the feeling that the quality of the finish of the underlying ss model is more important – that’s were I see the most problem, and if the ss has flaws then no amount of gold polishing is going to fix them.
I prefer the metal as polished as possible. Feedback from my customers has been that they love the brightness of gold, but the texture makes it look like gold paint. I would love a bright polished silver coat, and a (relatively) thick coat of copper/nickel plate first might help reduce the graininess. I am also patiently waiting for Antique Bronze. I like the bronze even more than the gold because it has warmth without being too yellow. I would be happy to live with the slight finish variations of bronze if it were made available.
big difference – the right one looks like gold! critical for jewelry
Ok, so I’ll be the different one! 🙂 I haven’t ordered a golden object yet. But I kind of like the satin look. It shimmers like glitter instead of acting like a smooth mirror.

Yes, love the difference. If I model a smooth surface, I want the printed surface to be as smooth as possible! Hope to see polish like this in finished products.
That’s pretty amazing. When will the objects we print look like that? (i.e., when will this new method be implemented?)
Wow, awesome!
Does the objects have to be convex to a certain degree for pre-polishing or something?
There are no specific shape requirements. Convex will always work better but the way we polish (with grid) will work for most shapes.
Very nice. I’ll want to use it right away to make extra-shiny one of these:

ARGH, that mazeball may be my latest Favorite Thing Ever On Shapeways. *favorited*
I suppose it would depend on the product, but I prefer the “original”. I have a few printed already and I think the present look is more of an antique gold.
Glenn
I love it !
And I’m also eagerly waiting for the antique bronze (both Matt and Shiny)
Can we pre-order/ test these somehow?
Oh man… why doesn’t the gold-plated stuff that I got look that shiny? My gold-plated items look like dull paint. I didn’t expect much for $5, but now I’m kinda jealous. Will there be a new, more expensive option for people that want shinier gold plated stuff?
