This week, we highlight designer Rose Thun, a tech girl after our own hearts, her shop is full of “infinite love” designs, as well as some great geometric but useful products we can’t help but love.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? Where are you located?
I’m a materials scientist, MBA, IT consultant, maker, sculpture garden junkie who lives in Maryland and has become a complete 3D printing fanatic.

What’s the story behind your designs? What inspires you?
Each design has its own story. My first print at Shapeways was my infinite love heart. I which is a heart from the front and an infinity sign from the top. It was inspired by a great performance of shadow puppetry and acting by Rorschach Theater called After The Flood. Based on the Ramayana myth, it’s a story about ideal love and a king and queen who are separated and on an epic quest to reunite. I wanted to show both the love and the infinite eternal continuous path of it.

What brought you to 3D printing with Shapeways?
You were one of the only services available when I started. I am grateful to you for making 3D printing so accessible, allowing me to evangelize 3D printing while you handle the details.

How did you learn how to design in 3D?
In the dark ages, I worked in the aerospace industry and used CATIA. Now I learn a few new tools per month because there are always new worthwhile features. I loved and recommend Kacie Hultgren’s course on Udemy this year.

How do you promote your work?
Social media, my recent advent calendar give aways, giving 3d printed objects to everyone, and just recently began exhibiting at wedding shows.

Who are your favorite designers or artists? Who in the Shapeways community has served as an inspiration to you?
All of Shapeways is an inspiration! Bathsheba was the first artist I’d ever seen before Shapeways existed and she used the same industrial service providers; her work is so elegant.  Theo Jensen’s mission is breathtaking. Nervous System’s finesse and permutations are gorgeous and delightful to see unfold. Todd Blatt for his work on and offline. The Shapeways team themselves are interesting and inspiring too. (Blushing!)



If you weren’t limited by current technologies, what would you want to make using 3D printing?
Sculptural lawn chairs and a playground sized infinite love sculpture.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
Scotch tape, as a kid, because it tasted like tonic water and I liked it. I am sure this explains something I shouldn’t reveal.
