Last week we announced the latest addition to our material offerings here at Shapeways, Gold Plated Brass!
On this episode of Shapeways Live, I interview Gabe, one of our materials geniuses here at HQ's in NYC. He shares his insights on the process and the perks of using this golden new member of the Shapeways material family.
Let us know what you're looking forward to making in this new material in the comments!
Do you like Freakin' Sweet Knots? How about Freakin' Sweet Apps? Meet John Allwine, he's a master of both!
John is an awesome Shapeways Shop Owner who is using 3D Printing to turn his love for knot tying into a freakin' sweet
small business! Now that is what we love to hear! He launched his Freakin' Sweet Knots custom ring app last week. The app leverages Shapeways API allows shoppers to customize rings based on a variety of sizes and Shapeways materials! I had an awesome conversation with John over Skype and learned all about the future of his app and the reoccurring role of knots in his own life, all while he sat on his front porch(jealous!)
Last week we travelled to Los Angeles for the annual SIGGRAPH Conference. We launched the new Gold Plated Brass with much excitement but by far the most attention was given to the Community Wall - a 10x10ft wall of panels designed by our community...
Beekey before the show...
...and our booth most of the time! Packed with people!
The star attraction being the community wall - people could touch all the materials...
...and read about them too!
We featured many community designs...
...and credited them all on the wall!
This steel panel by Virtox dominated the metals table, and the brass drew a lot of oohs and ahhs.
The past few months have been incredibly exciting for us in terms of material development. First, Elasto launched at the end of May, and then last week we announced Gold Plated Brass. As always, we want to see how the community feels and what you've been using the new materials for.
Come join us on Wednesday, August 7th, in New York and Eindhoven for a meetup! Bring any prints you may have and join us for a beer and a great time! Hope to see you there! RSVP on Meetup for both events.

This summer the IDSA International Design Conference has announced a competition for their launch day. The challenge is to design a 3D Printed car to launch down a ski-slope track at the conference.
To enter you have to design a car using their supplied wheels and axle and send the STEP file to Zach Kaplan of Inventables (firstname.lastname@example.org) by August 12. The top 10 designs, based on aesthetics and the utilization of unique 3D printing attributes, will be printed and launched down the ski-jump. The contest will be judged based on best flight, best aesthetics, and most spectacular crash. The top prize is a 3D Printer! For more information check here.
Last year at SXSW we handed out these awesome 3D printed business card cases designed by Salokannel- and the crowd seemed to love them as much as we do! We are now happy to announce that anybody or any company can customize their own case.
One side of the case is textured with a funky pattern, and the other side has a perfect space for your logo or name! Available in a variety of colors the cases can easily be designed to coordinate with your business cards. They also work great as promotional gifts!
The first custom case is $59.99, but after that they drop to only $25 each. Buy one here.
Last July, we saw Isohedral'sRocket Espresso Cupgo viral. We were excited about the espresso cups, and clearly we weren't the only ones! The espresso cups also caught the attention of Fred, of Fred and Friends, and now, a year later, a mass produced version the cups will be hitting shelves worldwide. We are very happy that Shapeways was able to play a part in the process, and we asked Craig a few questions about his journey from idea to mass market product.
Here at Shapeways we are always striving to bring you more materials and faster lead times. Last week we announced that White, Strong and Flexible was shipping in just six days. Today we are proud to announce a new material... Gold Plated Brass!
Once again, we've rounded up exciting community news and gathered it all here! We want to keep you posted as to what's going on throughout the Shapeways community and if you want to be informed- keep reading!
