With the latest release on Shapeways we have made it easier to share your favorites with an Embed and Email Share option.
Go to your favorites/wishlist and make sure they are NOT Private, on the right hand side of the screen you will see the Embed on your site and Share options.
When you choose the Embed option you will have three layout options (vertical, horizontal or grid) and two color options (light and dark). Below you see some of my favorites in the grid formation.
When you choose the Share option you will be given a SHPSW (shortened link) so you can share your favorites, perfect for letting a loved one know exactly what you would like for your birthday, graduation, anniversary, Christmas, father's day, wedding present........
This weeks Designer Spotlight focuses on Dario Scapitta, an Italian jewelry designer living in the Netherlands.
Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? Where are you located?
I was born in Valenza, Italy, which is one of the most important centers for the Italian jewelry design. For the last two years I've been living in Enschede in The Netherlands, a place where I can find new inspiration and live with more international and multicultural influences.
What's the story behind your designs? What inspires you?
Design, nature, art, people... everything that surrounds me is an inspiration. Sometime it is just like a flash in the night, before I sleep, an idea that it comes so quickly, just a suggestion, then I have to make some sketches and drawings. I then let them sit for a while, to mature like a good wine.
What brought you to 3D printing with Shapeways?
One year ago I thought to myself, it's time to think about my own ideas and designs. I thought that Shapeways was a nice place to start to produce and testing my designs. I like that I am able to experiment and test ideas and new materials.
How did you learn how to design in 3D?
When I was studying set design at the Accademy of Arts and Crafts Teatro alla Scala in Milan, I started using Alias Studio Tools. Then I went back to my hometown, where I started to work as jewelry designer using CAD and 3D printing.
How do you promote your work?
I like magazines and the internet which is faster of course, but I do love the real world. I like to see people's faces reacting to my designs and to hear their comments and questions. I used to show my designs in different fairs, exhibitions, galleries and design shops but most of the time people are finding me.
Who are your favorite designers or artists?
There is not enough space here for my list! Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Giorgio Armani, Santiago Calatrava, Renzo Piano, Kusuma Yayoj.
Who in the Shapeways community has served as an inspiration to you?
If you weren't limited by current technologies, what would you want to make using 3D printing?
Leonardo da Vinci was convinced that man could fly when started to design his helicopter, but was limited by the technologies of that time, so just wait and we might see a real Enterprise spaceship yet!
By now you have seen we have given the styling a much needed refresh on Shapeways but we have also improved features across the site. One feature that was a little hidden in the previous layout was the ability to contact a designer. We have lifted the Contact Designer button to the top left corner of every product page to make it easier for people to communicate with the designers of 3D Printed products on Shapeways.
For this weeks Shop Owner Tip we're pimping the Widget and want to see it in the wild! The widget is our Shop Embed tool that lets you create links for people to buy your Shapeways Shops products right from your own website.
You can easily curate a selection of your best products using Shapeways Labs Shop Embed tool. I suggest a row of three or a cluster of four. Users click the 'Buy' button to proceed directly to Shapeways checkout. You can use this to put up a few products on your homepage, or put up a whole shop on your website. See what looks best with your site's design.
Here's a selection of Jana the bear embedded on Cunicode.com - He's used it to create his whole store.
Use the tool, snap a screen shot and post it to twitter! We've got a $50 voucher for printing for our favorite, so get embedding! Entries close Monday the 23rd July.
We have seen quite a few of your Shapeways 3D Printed Products go viral through social media recently which brings a massive spike in traffic to a particular product, their shop and the rest of the Shapeways site. Following is a quick case study of how the 3D Printed Rocket Espresso Cup went viral over the past week.
The Shapeways gallery is full of amazing 3D printed products designed by individuals all around the world. Each time the one of their products sells they earn money while Shapeways takes care of the financial transaction, fabrication and distribution to the customer. A sweet deal for designers as they can simply do what they do best... design.
Opening a Shapeways Shop is free and anyone can do it. 3DPrinter.net recently posted a great article on how and why to open a Shapeways shop. It give a great account of the process along with some excellent advice on using descriptions for search engine optimization (SEO) that can really help people find your products..
We are seeing the number of the requests for 3D modelers increase every month to the point that a few of the Shapeways community members are getting a regular income stream from their 3D modeling skills. If you have some design skills you would like to offer for hire you can offer your services in the Shapeways forums so that people who are looking to hire a 3D designer can find you and some of your work. Many people want to 3D Print their ideas whether they be art, fashion, jewelry, products and architecture, sometime they just need a little help...
