Tuesday, November 30. 20103D Printed Articulated Robot Flash DriveI just wanted to give a sneak peek at a project I have been working on for our press kits in preparation for Showstoppers at CES in Las Vegas, January 6th 2011. Instead of the standard pamphlets and generic DVD or Flash Drive, we are going to be using fully articulated 3D printed robots that transform into cute little trucks, to back into your computer and share Shapeways info.
This is the first iteration so it will need some tweaks, but fairly close considering it was my first attempt at living hinges, sliding mechanisms, locking mechanisms and pivots!!! I wipe my brow with relief that they all worked. Any press that are not yet registered need to get in fast to get their 3D printed robot press pack!! Ceramist Flemming Tvede Hansen of the Danish School of Design has carried out a large number of experiments to examine the possibilities that lie in the interaction between contemporary digital 3D design and traditional ceramic form-giving, where form is partly determined by the material itself. These experiments formed the basis for his Ph.D. dissertation Material-driven 3D digital form-giving. Experimental use and integration of digital media in the field of ceramics, which he successfully defended at The Danish Design School in October 2010. NOT 3D printed by Shapeways but very cool. Somehow, despite being proven wrong by mythbusters I still have the fear of the phone wiping my card. Of course with the Paypal application you can bump iPhones together to complete a transaction, which would be so cool for selling wares at a design or craft fair...
*The Minimalist™ is the work of TRTL BOT, a Los Angeles-based company that designs eco-functional iPhone accessories. All of our eco-functional shells are made in Southern California. At the beginning stages, all the designs are discussed and implemented at the TRTL BOT solar powered office. Their solar panels provides enough power to run the office’s lights, computers, and printers. Nice.

Since Shapeways introduced glass to the range of materials available the team doing the process have come across the barriers of possibility, seen some amazing results like the Vase below which was hand painted with leaded glass enamels of the sort that traditional stained glass artist use. This is a secondary process, sort of like glazing pottery.
![]() GlenG is part of the team responsible and is generous enough to post really helpful information in the forums on a regular basis about the glass process. We have had very few problems with small solid parts . Failures are mostly due to bad design practices like overly thin sections, radical sectional changes, and lack of fillets. These problems tend to become magnified as model size increases. When designing hollow parts accommodations must be made to allow the support powder to completely fill all empty spaces. The support powder acts as a mold during firing. The glass becomes like soft toffee during firing and without support it will move in unexpected (usually disastrous) ways.
A big thanks to Glen for his time and effort in sharing his knowledge and experience from the coalface. Thursday, November 18. 2010Ponoko Launches 3D Printing ServiceA big welcome to Derek, Dave and the rest of the team at Ponoko who have made the move into the third dimension by adding 3D printing to their 2D laser cutting service.
Realized in partnership with Cloudfab, Ponoko are offering a range of 3D printed materials from their US hub including white polyamide, UV curable acrylic resin, ZCorp, stainless steel and gold plated stainless steel. They add 3D printing to their existing service which includes laser cutting of a vast range of materials along with electronic components via Sparkfun.
It is exciting to see another voice emerge along with Shapeways to promote the huge potential of 3D printing to independent designers and 3D printed products to potential buyers. We are sure to see much comparison between Shapeways and Ponoko on quality, price, service and shipping which will only drive everyone to work harder to provide a better experience for you the community of makers who use these services. Let us know what are the most important factors to you? is it cost? quality? delivery time? delivery method and cost? range of materials? service? ease of use? Mesh Medic? shop presentation? Also let us know how Ponoko's service compares to Shapeways when it comes to 3D printing? is it easy to upload, do files that upload to Shapeways get rejected by Ponoko or vice versa? is the quality of prints comparable? how is the price once shipping or membership is included? how does their customer service respond to your queries? let us know where we can improve. It is a very exciting time for the democratization of design through digital manufacturing, be it at home or via online services. It is VERY early days and it is great to be part of a movement that is growing so quickly that just might change the way we interact with manufactured objects forever.

Wednesday, November 17. 2010Make the Most of the Gift Season in Your Shapeways ShopOnline sales typically pick up in the weeks leading up to Christmas with people searching for the perfect gift for family and friends, colleagues and clients. Now is a great time to take a good look at your Shapeways Shop to ensure that it is presenting your items for sale in the best possible way. Images: Ensure your items are well photographed in 450x324 or 700x519 format, either with a plain background or in context to represent scale and use. If you do not have access to a decent camera get a friend with a camera to lend a hand, take a look at the photography tutorial for some pointers and please, please, please do not use your low resolution camera-phone, do not use a camera top flash, use a tripod instead.... Clean up your shop: do not clutter up your shop with 'default renders' of unrealized products. If you have great photographs next to bad images it erodes the overall integrity of the look of your shop. Decisions to purchase are often made the moment an object is seen (everything after that is usually a process of self-justification), make the decision easier with a clear, consistent shop.
