Announcing the Winner of the Design for iPhone 5 Contest (VIDEO)
We had over 70 entries to the 3D Print Contest for iPhone 5 Accessories with so many fantastic designs it was really hard for us to chose a winner among the high caliber of entries. There was one design that really caught the eye of the Shapeways team. As soon as we pulled one out of the 3D Printer to test it out, everyone was in love...
The product page is great but we really had to share a video so that everyone could see how the design captured our hearts and won $500 worth of Shapeways 3D Printing for the designer....
The winner of $500 worth of 3D printing is ArtizanWork with their iPhone 5 - "Sweater" Case.

The concept of a 'Sweater' with woven threads is somewhat different to chain maille, which is interlocking parts. One is somewhat feminine in nature, the other has masculine overtones of armor and war.
The sweater concept is carried through from style, description and presentation renders with a ball of yarn and the sweet byline of 'handmade by robots'.
This is what makes a solid entry to a conceptual contest.
That being said I was not aware of the chain maille design so perhaps it is not so famous.
I see the similarity with the movement but watching both videos there is also differences with threads with memory versus loose parts that shake and are not held in place.

If you don't know who is Janne Kyttanen, I think you should read a little more about design and 3D printing. Because he's famous (also for 3D printing) and for his cases also.
This kind of cases are known and available since 3-4 years on 3D printing technology for everyone.

Hey Jack44, just chill. Its not the end of the world. Not everyone can keep tabs on the works and designs of every designer on the planet either, its unrealistic to expect as much.

I just said this is not fair because this model already exists. The winner don't have an original model.
Of course nobody can know all of the designs of every designer. But for a contest on iPhone 5 accessories, a little research on existing models is easy to do.
It wasn't the case for this contest.
It's a shame for the other participant, I think.

Duann has already explained to you how they differ. So I wont bother going over it again. What youre seeing is not a direct copy, but a similar concept - something which is hard to avoid.
Either way, I'm sure the shapeways team sees tons of different iphone covers coming though their printers, they know something of quality when they see it, and so this iphone case was deemed to be the winner.

The man who made this case said that's an update of iPhone4/4S case (design by Janne Kyttanen).

I didn't know the Janne Kyttanen case for iPhone(s) before. But the winner case is near ("exactly") the same. I just read again the contest rules and it is written : "Entry must be a new design uploaded after September 13th, 2012." .

I think you don't really understand what I mean and also what jack44 said.
It's not about what I prefer in the contest or what you subjectively like.
It's about the fact that the winner made a copy of an existing design. This is not an original design and it's out of the contest objectively.
It's just about the rules, the facts and the other entries.
This is not fair and objective.
And the winner didn't respect the rules or didn't know the original case before.
And finally the judgement wasn't based on marks or objective rules...

I think Duann et al. at Shapeways chose well.
As a designer, the difference between the disputed designs is very clear to me. Further, I trust the folks at Shapeways to recognize a quality printed model when they see one.
